Cohasset wins Ames Award"Turns out, Cohasset won Globe award, not Norwell" Globe Staff / January 12, 2012 They’ve had a cooperative gymnastics team for so long, neither athletic director was sure when it started; 13 or 14 years ago was the best guess. In that time, Norwell and Cohasset have shared students, facilities, and a final win-loss record as the high schools combined to compete in the South Shore League. According to longtime friends and athletic directors Scott Paine (Norwell) and Ron Ford (Cohasset), it was a relationship that worked. But last month something they didn’t share resulted in the wrong school being announced as winner of the Ames Division 4 of the 39th annual Globe Scholastic Awards. As printed Dec. 25, Norwell was first with a win-loss percentage of 66.20 to Cohasset’s 66.13. But following publication the schools reported that Norwell’s totals did not include the 4-4 record of the girls’ gymnastics team. Because of the co-operative team status, each school’s totals should have included a 4-4 record. Cohasset wrote in 4-4. Norwell did not. And the Globe did not catch the omission. And when four wins and four losses are included for Norwell, the win-loss percentage falls to 65.80, just behind Cohasset’s 66.13. “I want to thank Scott Paine for the professional manner in which he handled this situation,’’ said Ford. “Scott is a first-class person and athletic administrator and it should come as no surprise to anyone that he has stepped up and responded to this the way he has. In my opinion, Cohasset and Norwell are the epitome of healthy rivals. We compete against each other in the South Shore League, and the level of competition, sportsmanship, and respect that exists between the two schools is one of the best examples of how rival schools should interact. “I want to congratulate and thank our student-athletes and coaching staff who contributed to the success of the Cohasset High School athletic program. I also want to thank the school administration, faculty, parents, boosters clubs, town officials, area businesses, and student and community ‘superfans’ who support our teams. For Cohasset High School, it is the third time since 2005 that we have won this award and when a school wins an award like this, it is because of a total team effort from the entire community. For me personally, it is a privilege and honor to direct a program that has such great support from everyone in the Cohasset community.’’ Paine echoed Ford’s comments. “I apologize to the Cohasset community but I am glad we are able to rectify the mistake and acknowledge Cohasset as the winner of the Larry Ames Award. I have the utmost respect for Dr. [Michael] Gill, Ron Ford, and the entire Cohasset coaching staff. Congratulations to the athletes, coaches, administrators, and parents on a fantastic accomplishment for the 2010-2011 athletic season.’’ Today, the Skippers will receive their trophy and the gymnastics team will get back to work, with its home opener against Bridgewater-Raynham. BE A SUPERFAN !BE A SUPERFAN ! GO BLUE AND PINK FOR A CURECongratulations and thank you to all the student-athletes, coaches, staff and superfans of the Cohasset High School Athletic Community who participated in the first program wide community service project to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer. During the month of October all of our student athletes and coaches wore pink "c" wrist bands and they were also given away at games and in school for a donation. We are happy to announce that over $600 has been donated to the Dana Farber Cancer Research Institute in Boston. Again thanks for all your efforts and support of this worthy cause.
